Britney tops celeb perfume sales

Britney Spears is top of the celebrity perfume chart but faces tough competition from rival stars, a retailer said today.

The singer’s Curious fragrance is out-selling perfumes by Kylie, Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham, according to Superdrug.

But it could be knocked off the top spot by Coleen McLoughlin’s signature perfume which goes on nationwide release tomorrow.

That will be followed by the launch of Kate Moss’s first fragrance – simply called Kate – which hits stores at the end of this month.

Other celebrities gearing up for their own perfume launches include Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani.

Their products will earn a slice of the multi-million pound global women’s fragrances market which in the UK alone is worth an estimated £600m (€883m).

David Beckham is the only celebrity whose brand sells “significant” amounts of men’s fragrances, Superdrug said.

The chain’s fragrance buyer Matt Twigg said: “The celebrity fragrance market is still incredibly strong. It’s a very simple way for our customers to instil a little red carpet glamour into their lifestyle.”

Celebrity-branded scents will account for 40% of the chain’s perfume sales this Christmas, Mr Twigg predicted.

The Kate Moss fragrance made by perfume house Coty will be backed by a TV and print advertising campaign featuring the model.

Here is Superdrug’s list of the best selling celebrity-branded fragrances:

1. Britney Spears

2. Kylie

3. Sarah Jessica Parker

4. Victoria Beckham

5. David Beckham

6. J Lo

7. Shilpa Shetty

8. Hillary Duff

9. Celine Dion

10. Paris Hilton
