Elton sells photograph collection

A collection of photographs belonging to rock star Elton John will go under the hammer today.

A collection of photographs belonging to rock star Elton John will go under the hammer today.

More than 100 pictures from the musician’s prestigious collection will be up for sale at Christie’s in New York, the auction house said.

“I never get fed up with looking at the images. I can honestly say that of all things I’ve collected in my life, nothing has been dearer to me than collecting photography,” Elton said.

Elton began collecting photographs in 1991 and his collection is now regarded as one of the leading private photography collections in the world.

From major vintage 20th century modernist works to cutting-edge contemporary images, the collection now holds over 4,000 fine art photographs.

The star decided to sell just a select few of his treasured photographs.

Josh Holdeman, International director and head of the photographs department at Christie’s, said: “Christie’s is honoured and delighted to have been entrusted with the responsibility of placing these 100 photographs into new homes.

“A periodic assessment of any collection is a productive and necessary exercise. The sale of certain acquisitions from time to time often proves a very useful endeavour, ensuring the collection’s continued integrity.”

Among the pictures are still life, portraits and fashion photography.

Ansel Adams’ Tetons and Snake River is expected to fetch up to £25,000 (€36,300), and a vintage print by the sculptor Constantine Brancusi is set to go for up to £8,400 (€12,200).

There are more works by Richard Caldicott, Adam Fuss and Sandy Skoglund.

A selection of works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Duane Michals, Irving Penn, Michael Kenna and John Dugdale is also featured.

And there are two early prints of Elton by British fashion photographer Norman Parkinson.

The auction begins at 11pm Irish time.
