George Bush Senior leaves hospital following neck injury

Former president George HW Bush has been released from a Maine hospital after falling at his summer home and breaking a bone in his neck.

Spokesman Jim McGrath said that “a very grateful” Mr Bush had returned home from Maine Medical Centre after four days of treatment for a fractured vertebra.

Doctors said Mr Bush did not suffer nerve damage when he fell at his home in Kennebunkport on Wednesday.

Doctors said they anticipate the 41st president will recover fully in three or four months.

Mr Bush has a form of Parkinson’s disease and uses a motorised scooter or a wheelchair for mobility. The 91-year-old is the oldest living former president.

The Republican served two terms as Ronald Reagan’s vice president before being elected president in 1988.
