Four people died and one was missing after torrential rain in northern Slovenia, local officials said today.
Firefighters, police and army were deployed to clear the damage from one of the worst storms in Slovenia in recent times.
The storm, which ravaged northern parts of Slovenia last night, caused floods that damaged hundreds of houses, swept away bridges and cars and buried a Second World War clinic – a national monument.
A 31-year-old volunteer firefighter was killed by electricity while pumping water from a flooded cellar in the north-western town of Cerklje na Gorenjskem, local police said.
In the north-eastern village of Podgorje, a young couple died after a mudslide buried their house, civil protection official, Darko But, told the state-run news agency STA.
The man’s parents, who were also in the house, were found alive.
In Zelezniki, a village that was hardest hit by the storm, a man’s body was recovered today from the mud behind his house, said regional police spokesman, Zdenko Guzzi.
A woman, last seen yesterday when trying to save her car, remains missing, he said.
