Comedian Billy Connolly will be honoured by his home city today.

The famous Glaswegian, affectionately known as The Big Yin, will receive the Freedom of the City in a ceremony this evening.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Connolly began his working life in the Clyde shipyards but soon moved into entertainment with his folk singing and comedy performances.

Now a veteran stand-up after more than 30 years on the stage, Connolly has also appeared in numerous films and TV series.

Lord Provost Bob Winter led calls for the city to recognise the performer for his contribution to comedy, film, music and his charity work.

Mr Winter said: “Billy Connolly is arguably the world’s best-known Glaswegian and is truly deserving of the Freedom of the City.”

Congratulatory messages from past recipients including Nelson Mandela, Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish will be read out at the ceremony at the City Chambers.

Broadcaster Michael Parkinson has also sent his best wishes to Connolly, whose appearance on the presenter‘s prime time chat show in 1975 sent his popularity soaring.
