Madonna arrived in Malawi today with the child she is in the process of adopting, apparently planning to visit orphanages and care centres she is involved in.

The pop diva arrived on a silver jet in the impoverished southern African nation.

A heavy police presence kept journalists at a distance.

However, a small child was seen being carried down the steps of the jet, followed by Madonna, and a child’s seat was loaded into the waiting car.

Madonna visited Malawi last autumn and took custody of a local toddler David Banda, whom she plans to adopt.

Malawian child welfare officials are expected to file a report on the suitability of Madonna and her husband, Guy Ritchie, as adoptive parents after two trips to their London home in May and December.

The singer’s New York-based publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said Madonna was going to Africa to continue her work with the Raising Malawi organisation.

“She is absolutely not adopting another baby,” Rosenberg said.
