Parents are being warned of the dangers of using only lap belts for their children in the back seat of the car.

The Irish Independent is reporting that a new study has found that one child died, and a number of others were injured in one year, from the use of lap belts.

The study shows that using just lap belts without special booster seats for children, can cause severe abdominal and lower spine injuries.

Doctors at Temple St Children's Hospital say seatbelts must be used along with shoulder straps for full safety.
