Seaman to lead Gunners

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that David Seaman will lead out Arsenal for the FA Cup final as captain, but with doubts still surrounding his future at the club.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that David Seaman will lead out Arsenal for the FA Cup final as captain, but with doubts still surrounding his future at the club.

Seaman has been passed fit for Saturday’s final against Southampton despite having missed training this week until today due to a stiff neck.

The 39-year-old Arsenal vice-captain will skipper the side in the absence of Patrick Vieira, who is ruled out of the game along with Sol Campbell, Pascal Cygan and Francis Jeffers.

Seaman has had to come to terms with the likely end of his international career, having just been left out of the latest England squad.

However, although Wenger accepts 40 will be a major psychological barrier for Seaman to cross, he insists that this does not necessarily mean the FA Cup final will be his last match for Arsenal.

Then again, he can give no guarantees about his future beyond the offer of a role as goalkeeping coach next season as he is still potentially in the market for a new first-choice keeper.

Wenger declared: “David Seaman is fit and will captain the side for the FA Cup final. Frankly, I don’t know whether it will be his last game for Arsenal though.

“I’m not in a hurry to make such a decision as I will offer him a job here anyway. It’s not like he will be unemployed tomorrow.

“We start training on July 8 and I know he will be here. In which position though, I don’t know. I have other worries at the moment, as he does.

“At the moment, I think he feels that he can still go on and I can completely agree with that, but we have agreed to play the cup final and then sit down and talk afterwards.

“I had a chat with David to speak about the future but in the last few years, we’ve always done his contract when he came back for pre-season training.

“But if I was going to make the decision that he was not going to be the automatic number one any longer, then I would respect any decision that he made.”

The key to Seaman’s future could lie in whether Wenger can attract the type of top-class keeper he is looking for, such as Turkey international Rustu Recber, at the right price.

However, the Arsenal boss insisted: “That depends which kind of decision I make with David.

“After that, I will maybe sign somebody or not. But I will not sign a number two keeper. If I sign one, it would be one that would replace David Seaman.”

Although Wenger believes that Seaman, who turns 40 in September, could still do himself justice at international level, he accepted Sven-Goran Eriksson’s reasoning earlier this week.

“At some stage, he was going to have to face that situation. I feel that Sven thought about whether he wanted to play at the European Championships with David Seaman or not,” he said.

“He maybe doesn’t think that David Seaman will go on until the European Championships and I can understand that he goes now for a keeper who will play there.

“Of course, he’s still good enough to play for England. The question mark is over the fact that he is nearly 40. Will he last another three months, six months or 12 months? We don’t know.

“It is a psychological barrier, I think, rather than physical. When your age starts with a ‘4’ then sometimes you can think that’s it.”

While Seaman, Ray Parlour and Martin Keown have been passed fit for the cup final, Wenger still has doubts over Oleg Luzhny and Lauren.

Both will undergo fitness tests and the Arsenal boss is probably only prepared to take one risk with his line-up.

“I will take as few gambles as possible. That means one but maybe not two or three. Whether it’s Luzhny or Lauren, I will see how they react,” he said.

If Lauren wins the vote, then Igors Stepanovs may partner Martin Keown, but if Luzhny is selected, he could play in central defence and Kolo Toure would presumably come in at right-back.

Wenger’s other major selection decision is whether to select Dennis Bergkamp or Sylvain Wiltord up front and either Wiltord or Fredrik Ljungberg on the right flank.
