Gardaí in North Cork have launched an investigation after a garda's private car was damaged in an arson attack while he was working.

It is the second such attack in Co Cork in the last three days.

The Garda had parked his car outside Buttevant Garda Station when he came on duty late last night.

At some stage in the night, the windscreen of the car was smashed with a brick and the car was set alight.

Gardaí are satisfied that it was criminally damaged and are appealing to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in Buttevant in the early hours this morning to contact them.

And in an unrelated incident, the private car of a Garda in East Cork was attacked in another criminal damage incident.

All four tyres on the vehicle were slashed when the car was targeted in Castlemartyr sometime in the early hours of Friday morning.

Gardaí later arrested a 21-year-old man and he was brought before a special sitting of Midleton District Court on Friday and charged.
