Mick won't let pressure ruin his World Cup

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy claims he will not let the pressure of competing in the World Cup spoil his enjoyment of the tournament.

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy claims he will not let the pressure of competing in the World Cup spoil his enjoyment of the tournament.

McCarthy is determined he will have a smile on his face whatever happens to the Irish in Japan and Korea.

He enjoyed playing at Italia '90 under Jack Charlton and he hopes to have as good a time this summer as coach.

‘‘I hope to do it with a smile on my face,’’ he said on BBC Radio Five Live. ‘‘I’ve spent six years trying to qualify for this and I’m not going to go there and get stressed out and worry about it.

‘‘I want to enjoy it and have a smile on my face. It’s only outside influences that can stop you enjoying it and I won’t let outside influences do that.

‘‘I think there will be pressure to win games, but I think the reality is it’s there to be enjoyed.

‘‘I went out there as a player and I thoroughly enjoyed it and now I want to enjoy it as a coach and manager.’’
