Eircom to resume talks with unions

Management at eircom and unions bosses have been asked to resume talks with the Labour Relations Commission later today.

Discussions between the parties to avert strike action were adjourned on Monday after more then six hours of negotiations. They were due to resume yesterday, but didn’t.

Union leaders said they were asked to meet with management at 3.30pm today.

“We are happy to meet with the LRC and we look forward to hearing what they have to say,” said Steve Fitzpatrick, General Secretary of the CWU, speaking on behalf of the unions.

“We hope that the fact that the talks are resuming is a positive sign.”

The CWU served strike notice on eircom last Thursday over its refusal to pay a 2% wage increase due under the National Pay Agreement unless members agree to work practice changes.

The union maintains the increase is designed to meet the rising cost of living and is not supposed to be linked to improved productivity.
