The destruction of a “landmark” hotel in Roscommon to a massive fire was tonight branded a blow to the county.
Several units of the fire brigade fought the blaze at the family-owned O'Gara Royal Hotel in Roscommon Town which broke out before 8am today.
Residents and neighbouring buildings were evacuated and the immediate area was sealed off by gardai, who confirmed they are not treating the blaze as suspicious.
Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council John Kelly said the destruction would have repercussions for the town in terms of jobs and business.
“This has happened to one of the nicest families.
“They always looked out for their customers and it is very sad for the town and the county.
“It was a landmark building, there’s no question about that.
“It’s a big blow for Roscommon and there will be repercussions for business,” he said.
The fire was reported after smoke was seen coming from the premises.
Up to 10 people were evacuated from the hotel and no injuries were reported.
The Main Street was closed to traffic as fire fighters battled to bring the blaze under control.
The cause has not yet been determined.
