The death toll in a car bombing at an open-air market in a Shiite town north east of Baghdad has risen to 30, Iraqi police and morgue officials said.

Yesterday’s bomb struck the town of Khalis, a Shiite enclave 50 miles north of Baghdad in the largely Sunni province of Diyala.

Most of those killed were sitting in a cafe in the centre of the market. About 80 people were also wounded in the attack.

Khalis is a former stronghold of al-Qaida in Iraq. It has seen powerful blasts, including a restaurant twin bombing that killed 57 in March.
