A record number of houses were built in the first six months of this year, according to Junior Minister Noel Ahern.

Figures released by Mr Ahern today showed that just under 36,000 housing units were completed in the first half of 2004, a 21.4% rise on the figures for the same period last year.

Mr Ahern said the figures demonstrated that government measures introduced in recent years had successfully boosted the supply of housing.

He said indications for 2004 suggested that house completions would continue to rise this year, resulting in the tenth successive record year of house-building.
