The anti-tobacco lobby group Ash Ireland has urged smokers to use the traditional Lenten period to kick the habit.

The anti-tobacco lobby group Ash Ireland has urged smokers to use the traditional Lenten period to kick the habit.

The group has pointed out that, apart from health issues, the average smoker spends €2,500-a-year on their addiction.

Ash Ireland chairman Fenton Powell said: “The more often you try [to quit], the more likely you are to succeed in the end.”

Figures have also shown a dramatic increase in the numbers of women developing lung cancer as more women smoke.
