Survey: 50% of public unaware of Dáil activities

Over half of Irish people do not feel well informed about the activities of the Dáil and the Seanad, according to the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission.

Over half of Irish people do not feel well informed about the activities of the Dáil and the Seanad, according to the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission.

The finding is part of a survey contained in the commission's annual report for 2006.

The commission says it has been studying the results of the survey and recognises that there is a clear need to better inform the public about its business.

In response, it has developed a communications strategy to increase public awareness and understanding.

Today's report points to changes made in the past year, including the introduction of webcasting, longer hours of access to Leinster House and the rapid placing of decisions on line.

In the coming year, the commission plans to improve the Houses of the Oireachtas web site and increase education and outreach facilities with a view to making the houses more visible and accessible to the public.
