The restoration of Cage and the continued brilliance of Streep; possibly heading for Oscar glory!
This much-praised and award-laden film is a cleverly complex tale set around the difficult task of writing. It's based on true stories: that of writer Susan Orlean's attempts to 'find' the mysterious horticulturist of her best-selling book, The Orchid Thief, and the frustrating attempts to turn it into a film.
The strength of the film - the one we are watching - lies in the playing of Cage (performing two roles) and the magical Streep. For Cage, whose recent films have been stinkers, it marks a fine 'comeback', while Streep merely continues to prove that she is the finest actress of her generation.
It is a film for those who relish the art form at its finest, a film whose range over the emotions is wide, broad, and satisfying, a film so packed with all that is best in storytelling and observation that it comes as an instant classic.
And what makes it such an enjoyable film on all levels is that everybody on screen looks as if they thoroughly delighted in its making. You will delight in it, too.
