An elderly woman has died in a house fire overnight in the midlands.

An elderly woman has died in a house fire overnight in the midlands.

The fire was discovered at 9.30pm yesterday evening at a bungalow in Ross Screggan near Tullamore.

The body of the 80-year-old woman was taken from the house to Tullamore General Hospital.

It is believed she died from smoke inhalation. Gardaí suspect that a candle may have started the blaze.
