Donal's father calls for National Children's Hospital to be fast-tracked
The father of the late inspirational teenager Donal Walsh, who campaigned against youth suicide while battling cancer, has called for the National Children's Hospital to be fast-tracked.
The hospital is to be constructed on the grounds of St James' Hospital in Dublin, but is not expected to be built for another six years.
5,000 people attended Donal Walsh's funeral in his native Kerry just over two weeks ago.
Speaking publicly for the first time since Donal's funeral, his father Fionbarr said that both Donal and the family had to endure shocking conditions in Crumlin Children's Hospital where Donal received chemotherapy.
"I'm 6'1 and most of the camp beds are 5'6 so you're sleeping on that beside your child who is sick getting chemotherapy who is sharing the room with another child," he said.
"You have four people in a room with two sinks and that is the facility and one wardrobe between the four of us."
