The Labour Party has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Independent Councillor Nicky Kelly with a view to him joining the party.

Mr Kelly served a jail term for the 1976 Sallins train robbery, but his conviction was subsequently overturned and his name cleared after a long campaign.

Fine Gael has also tried to attract him to their party, but a Labour spokesman said that they are confident their discussions with him will lead to a positive outcome.

He is expected to run for a seat in the next general election.
