Investigators believe the pilot knew something was wrong before the American Airlines jet he was flying crashed into a residential neighborhood, killing all on board, New York Governor George Pataki has said.

"We have been advised that that the pilot did dump fuel over Jamaica Bay before the crash, which is consistent with the pilot having some belief that there was a significant mechanical failure on the plane," Mr Pataki said.

New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said that all 255 people aboard the aircraft are presumed dead and six adults on the ground have been reported missing.

At least 161 bodies have been recovered, officials reported.
