Customs officers have seized an estimated 30 million illegal cigarettes which arrived in Dublin Port.

The consignment, valued at €6.84m, arrived from Miami via Rotterdam and had been declared as furniture on arrival.

The Revenue Commissioners said the cigarettes could have cost the Exchequer €5.6m in lost duties and taxes.

The bulk of the consignment was apparently intended for markets in Britain and the North.
