British women appear to be ditching the natural look in favour of fake tans and false eyelashes, according to one retailer.
Sales of fake tans and bronzers are up 40% at Superdrug compared to this time last year.
The high street chain has ordered additional stocks to meet customer demand for a healthy-looking glow as temperatures drop.
Superdrug says the perma-tan look sported by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston is one factor behind the trend.
Its sales of fake tanning products have doubled in the past three years.
Superdrug expects to sell two million bottles of fake tanning lotion this year alone.
The chain’s trading director Jeff Wemyss said: “Sales figures prove that a tan is a winter essential in the UK and we have now stockpiled enough bronzers and tanners to get all our customers through the winter season.”
He added: “Celebrities may be able to fly off to spend the winter months working on a golden Caribbean glow but the growth of fake tanners means that everyone can look as if they’ve just stepped off the beach at Sandy Lane, rather than off the No. 55 bus.”
In addition, false eyelash sales are up 150% compared to last year at Superdrug.
The chain expects to sell one pair every minute between now and Christmas.
St Tropez, Fake Bake and California Tan are three of the self-tanning brands popular with the stars.
