The Irish Farmers Association has announced plans to withhold cattle from meat factories from next Monday in protest at the prices offered by processors.

The IFA said the protest will continue until livestock farmers get at a minimum of €2.52-per-kilogram for cattle and until the Government rescinds all recently introduced levies, charges and penalties.

Association president John Dillon said: "With a major problem of farm income, particularly in the dry stock sector, the decision of the minister to target cattle farmers for another round of cutbacks was the final straw."
