The residents of Slane in Co Meath are planning to block the bridge in the town, on the N2 Dublin to Derry road, during this evening's rush hour.

They are campaigning for improved safety on Slane Bridge, which was the scene of an horrific accident on Monday.

David Garvey, who would have been celebrating his second birthday today, died and six others were injured.

The local residents are angry at yet another death on their roads and insist their protest will not end until their demands are met.

They are looking for the removal of traffic lights on the bridge, a relief lane with sand bunkers should trucks get into trouble on the steep hill, and the end to a conservation order on the bridge so it can be made safer.
