New York officials have told celebrities to stay away from the Trade Centre disaster scene because they're ruining the recovery effort.

Some personalities have brought work at ground zero to a halt during tours of the scene.

Visiting celebrities have included Muhammad Ali, Bette Midler, Sopranos actor James Gandolfini, Don King, Chevy Chase, actors Billy and Alec Baldwin and Candice Bergen.

Some celebrities have been invited to the site, and others have talked their way on to the site.

The director of New York's Office of Emergency Management Richard Sheirer said: "We've asked celebrities and people in the entertainment business to please not go to the site.

"It's a very dangerous place to go walking around. When we bring people down there it's a very controlled situation. Those people who try to go on their own create problems.

"They think they're helping. That's a very dangerous construction site right now. It's a crime scene. This is hallowed ground and it needs to be treated accordingly."
