WATCH: Athlete learns the hard way not to celebrate too early

Oregon college runner Tanguy Pepiot was understandably delighted when it looked like he was in for an easy win in the steeplechase event of the Pepsi Team Invitational track event.

He decided to ease off the pace and gesture to the crowd to cheer him on.

Big mistake.

Competitor Meron Simon of Washington found a final burst of speed and used it to power past Pepiot - getting over the line a fraction of a second ahead of him.

It’s a hard way to learn an important lesson: It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.

Fair play to the two athletes for showing sportsmanship, Simon went straight over to Pepiot after the race and the beaten runner shook the winner's hand and hugged him.
