The Government reportedly wants GPs to provide a greater range of services for patients and introduce longer opening hours in their surgeries.
Reports this morning said the measures were part of reforms being sought by the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive.
The two bodies also reportedly want family doctors to be made accountable for how they spend state funding, to undergo peer review and to engage in continuous medical education programmes.
Other reforms include a greater emphasis on the prescription of cheaper generic drugs in order to reduce the cost of the medical card scheme and a proposal to give GPs a greater role in disease screening and prevention.
