Five of Ireland’s top movies are to be screened as part of a travelling film festival in Poland, it emerged today.

The award winning The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Breakfast on Pluto, Adam & Paul, Bloody Sunday and Studs will be shown to audiences across the country next month.

With archives from the Irish Film Institute (IFI), the Reel Ireland Travelling Film Festival will visit Gydnia, Warsaw and Kracow, where film fans can see - and read with subtitles – some of our most famous movies.

“Following the success of the inaugural Polish Film Festival here last year, we began planning to bring a programme of Irish films to Poland, many of which have not been seen there before,” said Aoife Coughlan, Festivals and Reel Ireland Co-ordinator.

“There are so many connections between Ireland and Poland now this sort of cultural exchange just seems to make perfect sense.

“We at the IFI are delighted to be involved in this first ever Reel Ireland event in Poland.”

The three festivals will be held in Gydnia on June 15-16, Warsaw on June 22-23, and Krakow, June 29-30.

Reel Ireland makes items from the film archives available to cultural exhibitors in Ireland and abroad.

Updated annually, it comprises contemporary feature films, documentaries, shorts and classic archive titles, and offers audiences everywhere an exciting opportunity to experience some of the diversity of Irish cinema.

This current touring package of Irish films is designed to promote the country’s film culture internationally.

Titles available include the latest releases as well as old favourites such as Alan Parker’s The Commitments.
