Fildes on podium in Silverstone

Having finished fifth in yesterday’s round of the Renault Sport Clio UK Cup, Meath’s Jonathan Fildes

took the top step of the podium today.

In a first lap where several drivers got into trouble, the 27-year-old showed his experience and avoided the mayhem.

Lap by lap he extended his lead and took the chequered flag ahead of Mark Davies and back row starter, Danny Buxton. Eoin Murray, who won the sixth round, was fifteenth.

Meanwhile, in the first of the British Touring Car Championship, Northern Ireland’s Colin Turkington

claimed his first podium spot of the season.

Entering the final lap in fourth place, he took advantage of the problems of his MG ZR team mate,

Warren Hughes.

The race was won by James Thompson with his VX racing team mate, Yvan Muller second.

Turkington was eight in the second race won by Yvan Muller.

Robert Scott was the best of the Irish in the Formula Renault race, he was fifth and James Murphy was tenth.

In Mondello Park, David Donegan won both of the Dunlop Supercar races.

John O’Hara won the Formula Ireland sprint race but the result of the feature race is provisional.

It appears that the driving standards of some drivers was well below par – one driver allegedly

ignored a “black flag”.

The sprint race in this category was won by John O'Hara.

Emmett Queenan and Paul Sammin were second and third.

In the Fiat Abarth Cup, Liam Denning won the sprint race and Karl Leonard took the chequered flag in the feature race.
