More than a third re-offend on probation, study finds

More than a third of Irish criminals re-offended within two years after being placed under probation supervision or community service in 2007, according to official figures.

The CSO study revealed that 3,576 people were placed under probation supervision or community service in 2007 and, of those, 1,332 (37.2%) reoffended within two years.

The data also shows that recidivism rates are slightly higher for men, at 38.1%, when compared to women, at 32%.

Recidivism rates also decrease with age, the report found. A total of 52.6% of the 156 males aged less than 18 years re-offended, compared with 29.1% of males aged 45-64.

Those under probation supervision for burglaries and related offences had the highest recidivism rate of 47.7%.
