A football player was injured by a firework thrown from the crowd moments after the end of a cup final match in Belfast last night.

Linfield player Conor Hagan fell to the ground after being struck at the end of the County Antrim Shield final at Windsor Park.

The team had just gone down 2-1 to Belfast arch-rivals Cliftonville when the firework was thrown from among Cliftonville fans.

Hagan was tended by team medics and members of both sides before being able to regain his feet.

Hagan said afterwards: “I think it hit my back, bounced off me and then went bang. It shook me up for a couple of seconds – I was scared actually.”

The PSNI said the incident had not been reported to them.
