Lennon's 'other woman' blasts Yoko
John Lennon’s “other woman", May Pang, has blasted love rival Yoko Ono, accusing her of deliberately trying to alter history and blot out her two-year relationship with the Beatle.
Pang had been John and Yoko’s personal assistant when the pair fell in love and moved in together.
The fling came to an abrupt end when Lennon moved back in with Yoko in 1975, although Pang claims they remained close until his death in December, 1980.
Lennon, a musical based on the former Beatle’s songs, hits Broadway this week and Yoko played an integral part in its production. But there is no mention of Pang.
“I’ve been airbrushed out, as it were,” she tells New York magazine Steppin’ Out.
“You can imagine my frustration at being erased from history deliberately. I really don’t know how Yoko can sleep at night knowing what she’s done. But I can tell you I sleep very peacefully.”
Pang says that if she were to meet Yoko today she would tell her that to deny any part of Lennon’s life was unfair to him.
She claims that the time she spent with the former Beatle was his most productive and creative solo period.
“History is one thing that nobody can take away,” she said.
“No matter what anybody says or whose side you’re on.”
Pang, 55, admits that she may look bitter, having been the girlfriend rather than the wife, but says she knows the truth will prevail.
She claims that when they were together a jealous Yoko used to call up to 20 times a day.
“There was never a point where she didn’t try to get John back,” she said, accusing Yoko of eventually hypnotising her lover to get him back.
“Over the next five years Yoko tried to erase me from John’s life,” she said. “But she couldn’t. He kept calling me.”
Lennon himself dubbed his relationship with Pang “The Lost Weekend.”
Pang went on to marry, and eventually divorce, producer Tony Visconti, with whom she had two children.
She wrote a book called Loving John and is currently working on a radio programme entitled May Remembers as well as compiling an exhibition of her photos and memories of Lennon.
