The dismembered body of a known Islamic militant was found by a roadside in the West Bank today but the circumstances surrounding his death are a mystery.
Hani Rawajbeh’s body was found on a road often used by Israeli soldiers and Jewish settlers.
Residents in the nearby village of Tel said they heard shooting last night and then an explosion. Doctors said they could not determine whether the 22-year-old victim was killed in an explosion or by an Israeli missile.
Rawajbeh was an assistant to Mahmoud Abu Hanoud, the leader of the Hamas military wing in the West Bank.
Hamas has carried out a series of suicide bombings in Israel in the past year and a number of Hamas activists have been killed when the bombs they were planting exploded prematurely.
This could explain Rawajbeh’s death, but the shooting heard in the area would suggest that he may have been killed following a shoot-out with Israeli soldiers.
