Detectives are investigating allegations of an attack during a hurling game in which a referee’s arm was broken after he sent a player off.
The trouble flared soon into the junior hurling championship match between Crumlin and Naomh Barrog in Dublin on Sunday.
Referee Eddie Walker, 37, is reported to have been verbally abused after showing a Crumlin player a yellow card.
When Mr Walker then produced the red card, a player, who has not been identified, struck him with a hurley.
Mr Walker, from Dublin, was taken to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries and his wife said a metal plate was inserted in his arm.
A gardai spokesman said: ‘‘We are investigating an alleged assault on a referee who appears to have been struck with a hurling stick after sending a player off.
‘‘No arrests have yet been made but we are following a line of inquiry.’’
