The chief executive of the Irish Sports Council has hailed the opening of the new National Aquatic Centre.

John Treacy, an Olympic silver medallist in 1984, said the centre, combined with local investment, will help Ireland produce future medal winners.

"The Government has invested quite a substantial amount of money in development or redevelopment of pools at local level so the facilities are being provided and we're hoping that more young people will become attracted into the sport," he said.

"If you have a good base of people coming into the sport, then that's how we'll produce world-class swimmers in the future."
