Simon Pegg: not a fan of drunks

Simon Pegg doesn't like being around drunk people – and says staying sober boosts creativity.

The 43-year-old actor gave up the booze years ago in a bid to stay trim and he admits he can't stand going to the pub with people who have had one too many because he doesn't want to fall off the bandwagon and follow suit.

He said: "Now I've got a bit of distance from it, I feel like I don't want to go back to it in a way. Maybe it's because when I go out with my friends now - and this was a revelation to me - round about 10

o'clock I start looking around me and thinking, 'Everyone's an a******e! When did this happen?'

"And I realise I probably was as well when I was drinking ... I don't really like being around drunk people any more. So I'm kind of happy not to be a part of that."

The 'World's End' star decided to ditch the booze after welcoming his daughter Matilda into the world with his wife Maureen four years ago, but he insists since being tee-total he's noticed his creativity flow has improved.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent newspaper, he explained: "It wasn't enhancing my life in anyway - that's kind of why I stopped. It wasn't making me healthy, I was a dad, I wanted to be present in the morning."

He added: "People always say, 'Oh did you think that up in the pub?'

You never have good ideas in the pub! Unless you're someone like Shane MacGowan! Or someone for whom it is a creative fuel. I wasn't funny when I was drunk or stoned or whatever. So, yeah, not drinking is definitely an aid to creativity."
