Two women tourists on a weekend break in Dublin suffered severe facial injuries when they were attacked in the city centre last night, gardaí said.
The women, both from Cardiff, were walking from a pub to their hotel with their husbands when they were knocked to the ground by a lone male attacker.
The women, one aged 64 and the other aged 48 were repeatedly kicked and punched around the face and head.
They were later treated at St James’ hospital.
Police said the attack, which happened at around 11pm last night, was unprovoked.
The man is thought to have been following the pair.
Robbery is not believed to have been a motive.
Detective Inspector John Fitzpatrick said officers were appealing to the public for help tracing the man, who is described as 6ft 3in to 6ft 5in, bald and tanned.
He was wearing a three-quarter length jacket, black trousers and Doc Marten-type shoes or boots.
Detective Inspector Fitzpatrick said: “We are very anxious to trace this man. He may have gone into a shop, somebody may remember this particular man that committed this assault.
“He is very distinctive due to his height and his physical appearance.”
The injured women were today still being treated in St James’ hospital.
