The versatile Republic of Ireland international, Rory Delap has completed his transfer to Southampton from Derby County for Stg£4m.

Delap has proved an invaluable member of the Derby County squad, he has played in his usual role as wing-back but has also deputised as a forward, in midfield, on the wing and at full-back.

He will become the new Southampton manager, Stuart Gray’s, first signing since he took over from Glen Hoddle when he passes a fitness test and signs his contract later today.

Jim Smith was reported to be reluctant to release such a valuable member of his Rams team but Delap’s fee will help finance the move for Italian international, Fabrizio Ravenelli.
