John Terry came closest to breaking the deadlock in this hard-fought contest at Stamford Bridge when he saw his first-minute header cleared off the line by Fredrik Ljungberg.

But after Terry’s near-miss both sides managed to cancel out any attacking flair leaving the game goalless at the interval.

Arsenal’s best chance fell to Ljungberg but the Swede was unable to direct his shot into the net from an acute angle after Alex Hleb and Thierry Henry had created the opening at the far post.
