Mosley in spotlight after drivers' letter

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association have passed the buck back to Max Mosley in their ongoing row with the president of the FIA.

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association have passed the buck back to Max Mosley in their ongoing row with the president of the FIA.

Mosley was scheduled to meet the GPDA at Silverstone tomorrow to discuss the farce that unfolded during the United States Grand Prix, along with safety issues at Formula One test sessions.

However, Mosley chose to withdraw after reading comments made by David Coulthard, with the Scot criticising the new tyre regulations brought in for this season.

Mosley censured GPDA directr Coulthard for his outspoken views, which he claimed made the safety meeting impossible.

Mosley had already spoken to Coulthard over the French Grand Prix weekend, when he allegedly threatened to withdraw support for safety initiatives being pursued by the GPDA.

In response to Mosley’s snub, the organisation made public a letter to the Englishman expressing their disappointment at his actions, signed by 19 drivers, excluding Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello and Red Bull duo Coulthard and Christian Klien.

Williams BMW driver Mark Webber, like Coulthard a GPDA director, insists the ball is in Mosley’s court and the invitation is still applicable should he wish to meet tomorrow.

“From a GPDA perspective, we strive to make Formula One the pinnacle of our sport and we all want to represent it in the best light,” asserted Webber.

“Safety is something that is clearly top of our list as drivers. We’re always looking to improve that.

“Clearly there has been a bit of friction. There have been open letters which sometimes are a bit of a quiet voice.

“This open letter just stated the fact that when we do have opinions we get criticised.

“But we are all together, we support David, who was the one that got the phone call, and as drivers we are supporting each other for the benefit of the sport and to make it safer.

“The invitation is still there for Max to come to the meeting with us tomorrow. We want to talk about safety. We don’t want to talk about the regulations.

“The obligation of the GPDA, and myself as one of the directors, is to look at making the sport better both short term and long term so kids can have a sport they can look up to and have some respect for.”

Coulthard, meanwhile, has defended the GPDA’s decision to submit their letter to Mosley as he said: “It was to show disappointment with the events after Indianapolis.

“We obviously want to sit down and discuss that and we thought the best way was to do it face to face, but that’s obviously not possible.

“Nonetheless, we have got an indication we can meet at some point in the future and discuss it.”

The team principals want Mosley to step down, in particular after his refusal to compromise in Indianapolis, partly resulting in the uproar that led to the seven teams who use Michelin tyres withdrawing from the race.

Understandably, when asked for their opinion, it proved a difficult subject for Webber and Coulthard to comment on, yet Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella can appreciate such apparent sentiments.

“Obviously, we had problems after Indianapolis and now there is a big mess, so everyone is a bit disappointed about what is going on in Formula One,” said Fisichella.

“Maybe because of that problem in Indianapolis, they [team principals] don’t want to see Max Mosley as the head of the FIA.”
