A bus with failed brakes plunged nearly 200 feet into a ravine in Peru, killing 18 people.

The accident happened on Friday close to the town of Mazocruz.

The bus was carrying merchants from the city of Arequipa to Puno.

Survivors told police the driver tried four times to run the bus into the side of a mountain to slow it down after the brakes failed on a steep incline in the winding road.

The bus ended up striking a boulder, killing the driver, and sending the vehicle off the mountain.
