Children from around the country will meet today as part of the process of appointing an ombudsman.

Seventy children in total will attend the meeting, as part of the first appointment to the post in this country.

The Minister for Children Brian Lenihan is expected to outline children's involvement in appointing the official.

A select group of individuals will be party to the interview process for the position.

The ombudsman will have two roles - to safeguard the welfare of children and to investigate accusations of wrongdoing against institutions or public bodies.
