Former French rugby team captain Marc Cecillon is in police custody after witnesses at a party saw him shoot and kill his wife.

About 60 people were present at the Saturday night party in the town of Bourgoin-Jallieu, near Lyon, when Cecillon pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at his wife, said police.

Cecillon, 45, was restrained by guests and turned over to police, who said he appeared to be drunk when taken into custody.

Known as a powerful flanker, Cecillon played for France 46 times, occasionally as captain, from 1988-1995.
