Ryan Giggs is ready to return for Manchester United at Southampton on Sunday but the Welsh star will have a battle on his hands to win a place in the starting line-up.

Giggs has been out of action since picking up a slight hamstring injury in training on New Year’s Day but seems certain to be added to the squad for United’s first visit to St Mary’s.

Goalkeeper Fabien Barthez missed last Sunday’s FA Cup win at Aston Villa with a slight ankle injury but he too is fit again and likely to take over from stand-in Roy Carroll.

Young defender John O’Shea, who seemed to be establishing himself in the side until he was injured on December 15, is also in the squad.

Team (from): Barthez, Carroll, G Neville, P Neville, Blanc, O’Shea, Silvestre, Beckham, Veron, Keane, Butt, Scholes, Giggs, Solskjaer, Yorke, van Nistelrooy, Wallwork, Chadwick.
