Detective Superintendent, Jim Browne, retires

One of Limerick's most senior Gardai, a key player in the fight against gangland criminals in the city, has retired today.

Detective Superintendent Jim Browne, who joined the force nearly 40 years ago, is regarded as one of the most dedicated crime fighters of his generation.

He was part of the team that oversaw the demise of the Dundon McCarthy criminal network, the Keane / Collopy gang and the Ryan's.

Firearm offences have reduced nearly 100% since the height of the feud in the mid 2000s.

Detective Superintendent Browne says Gardai have won the fight against gangland crime, but that there's no room for complacency:

Michael Noonan, TD, said during a speech tonight that he had spoken to the Taoiseach earlier this evening who had personally passed on his "best wishes" to Detective Jim Browne.

Through Mr Noonan, Mr Kenny personally thanked Det Browne for his long and exemplary service in keeping citizens safe from the scourge of gangland crime.

"Mr Kenny asked me to say 'thank you Jim' on his own behalf and on behalf of the entire cabinet," Minister Noonan said.
