Appeal for school uniforms to be made cheaper

A number of groups have come together to urge schools to re-think their uniform policy in order to help bring costs down.

The St Vincent de Paul, Barnardos and the National Parents Council Post Primary have consulted with unions and schools to make uniforms more affordable.

Suggestions include considering a plain-coloured uniform which can be bought from high-street retailers or having a pre-worn sale of uniforms at the school.

Don Myers of the National Parents Council said: "What we're looking at is that management would basically review the school uniform policy in the school.

"Anything from maybe the number of items that are crested, just to in general see what way - in any way or form - there can be savings made for parents on the cost of these items."
