Alex Ferguson claimed Ryan Giggs was “back to his best” after the Welshman’s double had inspired Manchester United to a 6-0 FA Cup demolition of West Ham.
Doubles from Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy as well as strikes from Phil Neville and sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer booked United’s place in the fifth round in emphatic style as the Hammers’ dismal season got even worse.
Giggs has been under fire from some sections of the United support in recent weeks but he looked sharp as he notched in the eighth and 29th minutes.
And Ferguson told BBC1: “Confidence affects everyone, there’s no player who does not get affected by that, but you see him today, he was terrific and he’s back to his best.
“It was a good performance, we’ve gradually been getting better in the last few weeks, particularly the last week or so.
“Some of the goals were very good and there’s a lot of confidence in the team at the moment.”
United dominated almost from the first minute as West Ham, currently the bottom club in the Premiership, saw their hopes of a cup diversion ended.
And Ferguson added: “I think for West Ham it’s a difficult time and confidence in their team has gone down.
“I thought some of our passing was very good, there was a good speed to our passing and periods of the first half were terrific.
“At 2-0 I was never confident at half-time, they could have scored and made it an interesting match.”
