Talks aimed at agreeing €2bn worth of public spending cutbacks are due to continue at Government Buildings in Dublin today.

Yesterday, employers, trade unions and government officials began a fresh round of discussions to find consensus on measures to plug the massive deficit in the public finances.

The talks are set to continue over the coming days, but a final agreement - if any - is not expected before the weekend.

The unions say they were presented with a broad framework of objectives by the Government yesterday, but no specific proposals are believed to have been put forward.

Some of the measures being considered are reported to include cuts to allowances, increments and overtime for public-sector workers, as well as higher taxes for big earners and a property tax on second homes.
