Thousands of Indonesian men have had their work pay put in their wives' bank accounts in an attempt to encourage the men to stop having affairs.

A local government paid the cash from 3,200 civil servants' account after the Gorontalo administration on northern Sulawesi Island previously said it would give the wives the chance to spend the money rather than it being spent on mistresses.

Government spokesman Rifly Katili said: "Men are usually unable to control their behaviour if they have too much money in their pocket.

"I'm pretty sure this will eliminate the possibility of love affairs that undermine families."

He is unsure of how many of the civil servants have been unfaithful to their wives, but he admitted 90 per cent had agreed to take part in the scheme.
